Carl “Chuck” Goff Jr. began playing bass with Toby Keith in 1993. During their nearly 20 years together, he recorded on every one of Keith’s albums, beginning with his self-titled debut in 1993. Since then, Goff rose to the position of bandleader and co-wrote two of the superstar’s hits, “You Ain’t Much Fun” and “Upstairs Downtown,” both with Keith as his writing partner. Goff died on Feb. 27 in a two-vehicle crash near Slaughterville, Ark., about 35 miles south of Oklahoma City. He was 54.
