BOBBY DENTON (1941-2014
Celebrated for more than 40 as the voice of Knoxville’s Tennessee Vols, Bobby Denton was also a successful Country radio station GM and a member of the CMA Board of Directors from 1987 to 1992.
Before establishing his catch phrase, “It’s time for football in Tennessee,” as the traditional call to action before kickoff at Neyland Stadium, Denton began a 36-year stretch in the radio business, rising eventually to the position of GM at WIVK-FM Knoxville. Under his leadership, the station won four CMA Awards as Medium Market Station of the Year.
Additionally, he broadcast play-by-play action for more than 500 games over ESPN, ESPN II, CSS and Fox SportSouth. For more than 15 years, he announced at Talladega Superspeedway, including Winston Cup races. In 2003, he was inducted into the Greater Chattanooga Area Sports Hall of Fame.
Denton, 73, died April 9 at home in Knoxville following a bout with cancer.
