Lynn Anderson, the sweet-voiced child of songwriters and had a long string of hits in the 1970s and ‘80s, has died. She was 67.

Anderson won a number of awards and was one of the most notable performers during an important era in Country Music history. With a cosmopolitan sound that was distinctly Country, but also featured strings and the breezy melodies of the day, she cut across boundaries. Her worldwide hit “(I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden” achieved the rare feat of topping the Country and pop charts simultaneously.

The singer had had a few hits previously, but the success of the song and subsequent Rose Garden album made her one of Country Music’s biggest stars. She received seven CMA Awards nominations in her career and was named Female Vocalist of the Year in 1971. The single and album also received nominations that year in the respective categories.

“I was able to spend time with Lynn at this year’s CMA Music Festival while she was signing for fans inside Fan Fair X,” said Sarah Trahern, CMA Chief Executive Officer. “She rarely missed an opportunity to interact with her fans and she was as vibrant and engaged as ever, excited about her new music this year. We will treasure her legacy and her timeless songs.”

Born in North Dakota on Sept. 26, 1947, and raised in California, Anderson gained her love of Country Music from her mother, the late Liz Anderson. The elder Anderson, who received the Stephen Foster Award from the Nashville Songwriters Association International with her husband Casey last year, wrote hits like “The Fugitive” and “My Friends Are Gonna Be Strangers” for Merle Haggard.

Anderson was already a weekly performer on the “Country Corners” program out of Sacramento, California, when she signed on as the only Country performer on “The Lawrence Welk Show.” She already had minor hits “That’s a No No,” “Promises, Promises,” and “Rocky Top” by the time she was 20. Anderson moved to Nashville with her husband and producer Glenn Sutton, signed with Columbia Records and was soon introduced to Joe South’s “Rose Garden.”

She went on to have 11 No. 1 hits and more than 50 in songs in the Top 40. Notable tracks also included “Cry, “How Can I Unlove You,” “You’re My Man,” and “Even Cowgirls Get the Blues.”

Anderson was still an active performer and occasional recording artist. In June she appeared at her 16th CMA Music Festival since her appearance at the inaugural event in 1972.
